More than 60% of U.S. adults are considered overweight. Weight is related to health because being overweight or obese significantly increases a person's risk of stroke, heart disease, high blood pressure, arthritis, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. Losing even small amounts of weight (e.g., 5-10% of your body weight) has been shown to lower risks for many of these conditions. In addition to the health benefits of weight loss, quality of life also improves as individuals who lose weight report that they have more energy and feel better. |
